Argentine football club developments
Overview
The Argentine football landscape remains highly active regarding club management and transfer market movements. At River Plate, Leonardo Ponzio has been officially ratified as the first-team head coach with a contract extending until August 31, 2027. While Ponzio initially served as an interim manager following Eduardo Coudet’s departure, the long-term contract was required to comply with Argentine Football Association regulations. Under Ponzio’s leadership, the team has secured several victories, including a 3-0 win over Belgrano, earning support from figures like journalist Mariano Closs.
River Plate is actively managing its roster, including negotiations to extend goalkeeper Santiago Beltrán’s contract through 2029, potentially with a 100 million euro release clause. To bolster the defense, the club is preparing a formal offer for Argentinos Juniors defender Francisco Álvarez, with negotiations expected between $4.5 million and $5 million.
Boca Juniors continues to navigate squad depth and competition challenges. The club is monitoring Álvarez as a defensive option and has seen Racing Club secure Juan Barinaga on loan from their ranks. Ahead of a decisive Copa Sudamericana second leg against Vasco da Gama, following a 0-1 first-leg loss, coach Rodolfo Arruabarrena faces selection dilemmas. The team is evaluating whether to start Leandro Paredes, who is returning from a muscle injury, or Rodrigo Battaglia, while also weighing attacking options involving Sebastián Villa or Alan Velasco to support strikers Merentiel and Flores.
