Rivers in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh exceed danger levels, raising flood risks

Major rivers in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh are rising toward or exceeding danger levels, increasing flood risks across several districts despite lower-than-average rainfall in some areas.

In Bihar, the Ganges, Son, Gandak, Kosi, Ghaghara, Budhi Gandak, and Bagmati rivers are flowing near or above warning marks. In Patna, the Ganges has exceeded danger levels at Gandhi Ghat, Digha Ghat, and Hathidah. The rising water has entered the Chandika Sthan temple complex in Munger. Other rivers, such as the Son in Ganer and the Gandak in Dumariyaghat, are also above critical levels.

In Uttar Pradesh, six major rivers, including the Ganges and Ghaghara, are flowing above the danger mark, creating flood-like conditions in 13 districts. In Varanasi, the rising Ganges has submerged all 84 ghats, forcing religious ceremonies and cremations to take place on rooftops. While heavy rains continue in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, Rajasthan has experienced increased heat and humidity due to a weakening monsoon.
