Osun State Gubernatorial Election: Preparations, Security, Arrests

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is intensifying preparations for the Osun State governorship election scheduled for August 15. INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan repeatedly assured residents that the outcome will be decided by ballots, not violence, and outlined security collaborations with police, the Ministry of Defence and service chiefs. A mock voter accreditation exercise using the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) was conducted in twelve local government areas, but the trial was disrupted when the BVAS machines suffered simultaneous technical faults.

Amid the heightened security focus, the Imole Campaign Council reported that 86 members of the Accord Party were arrested and detained in Abuja and Keffi without charge, alleging partisan action by the Osun State Commissioner of Police. The Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun Oyetunji, urged a peaceful, free and credible election, emphasizing that no lives should be lost. In related political tension, APC governorship candidate Bola Oyebamiji skipped a peace‑accord meeting, drawing criticism from the Adeleke campaign. Overall, observers note a climate of accusations, arrests and fears of violence as the state approaches the vote.
