Riyadh Municipality completes 110km Wadi Al-Sully rehabilitation
The Riyadh Municipality has announced the completion of rehabilitation works for the main course of Wadi Al-Sully, a 110-kilometer waterway extending from northern to southern Riyadh. The project aims to restore the natural flow of the valley, which had been interrupted for decades, and integrate it into the city’s stormwater drainage network.
The development involved reshaping the valley’s path and managing 21 tributaries, allowing the system to accommodate up to 40% of rainwater and floodwaters in Riyadh. The works spanned from the Banban area in the north, through the Al-Rimal district in the east, to the outlet in the Heet area in the south. Engineering efforts included excavating over 44.5 million cubic meters, removing 1.5 million cubic meters of obstructing materials, and implementing significant stone and concrete protections.
By connecting Wadi Al-Sully to an integrated network of culverts and hydraulic structures, the project enhances the drainage efficiency of eastern and northeastern Riyadh. The valley serves as a primary natural outlet for runoff from an area of 2,400 square kilometers, covering 75 neighborhoods, thereby reducing the risk of flooding and water accumulation.
