Saudi Arabian stormwater drainage infrastructure development

Overview

Saudi Arabian municipal authorities have undertaken significant infrastructure projects to improve stormwater management and flood prevention across the Kingdom.

In Riyadh, the municipality completed the rehabilitation of the 110-kilometer Wadi Al-Sully waterway. This project involved reshaping the valley and managing 21 tributaries to restore natural water flow and integrate the area into the city’s drainage network. The works, which included massive excavation and the installation of hydraulic structures, are designed to accommodate up to 40% of Riyadh’s rainwater and runoff from 75 neighborhoods.

Broadening the scope of these efforts, the Ministry of Municipalities and Housing reported the completion of over 200,000 linear meters of drainage networks across various cities during the first half of 2026. This initiative included the installation of main and secondary networks, box culverts, and drainage channels intended to increase urban readiness for rainy weather and enhance overall urban resilience.
