Heatwave drives record temperatures and safety alerts across Ireland and southern UK

Met Éireann has placed a Status Yellow high‑temperature warning over all of Ireland, forecasting daytime highs of 31‑33 °C and overnight lows above 15 °C, with a chance of breaking the 1887 heat record. Thunderstorms are also expected later in the week.

Health officials warn that the extreme heat raises the risk of heat stress, uncomfortable sleeping conditions and water‑related accidents. The World Health Organization highlighted the threat to public health, while the RNLI in both Ireland and the UK issued water‑safety advice, noting cold‑water shock can occur in water below 15 °C and urging swimmers to follow the "Float to Live" protocol and stay within flagged zones. Lifeguard patrols have been increased on South‑Devon beaches.

Energy specialists suggested a low‑cost cooling method: placing bowls of cold water or ice on windowsills or in front of fans to help lower indoor temperatures without high electricity consumption.
