Río Negro monitors environmental compliance of Argentine LNG project

The Secretariat of Environment and Climate of Río Negro is conducting on‑site inspections of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) project being built in the Gulf of San Matías. The monitoring covers both terrestrial works and the maritime infrastructure associated with the floating LNG facility, verifying that each stage complies with current environmental regulations and the commitments made by the operating company.

Key aspects of the oversight include monitoring flora and fauna, protecting marine and land ecosystems, managing waste, preventing impacts and overseeing remediation in affected areas. The province aims to ensure that energy expansion proceeds with planning, responsibility and permanent state control, with the authority ready to apply corrective measures or sanctions if obligations are not met. The project seeks to position Río Negro as an export hub for Argentine LNG, featuring submarine installations and a logistics centre at Puerto San Antonio Este, while promoting local employment and supplier development.
