Río Negro secures US$ 900 million for Vaca Muerta gas pipeline

The province of Río Negro has secured US$ 900 million in international financing for the San Matías Gas Pipeline. This project, part of a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) scheme driven by Southern Energy, aims to connect the Vaca Muerta production basin to the coast. The 472-kilometer pipeline will have a capacity to transport up to 27 million cubic meters of gas per day, enabling Argentina to export gas via liquefaction vessels in the San Matías Gulf.

In addition to fossil fuel infrastructure, Río Negro is exploring renewable energy opportunities. A pre-feasibility study by the Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy System Technology (IEE) indicates high potential for green hydrogen production using the region's wind resources. With average wind speeds of 8.65 meters per second, areas such as Cerro Policía have been identified as favorable for wind generation to power electrolysis processes.
