Sicily's A18 highway delays prompt calls for CAS resignations

Drivers on Sicily's A18 highway have endured waits of up to three hours, with many opening umbrellas on the carriageway to escape the summer heat. The prolonged congestion follows a series of ongoing construction sites and unstaffed toll booths, which regional deputy Salvo Tomarchio (Forza Italia) says have become intolerable.

Tomarchio criticised the Consorzio per le Autostrade Siciliane (CAS) for its lack of transparent timelines and staffing plans, urging the agency to publish completion schedules for current works. He called for the resignation of CAS senior officials, arguing that “the perverse combination of endless works and unmanned tolls is no longer tolerable” and that without decisive action similar incidents will repeat throughout the summer, jeopardising citizen safety and wellbeing.

The remarks highlight growing public frustration with infrastructure management on the island’s main east‑west route.
