Road traffic kills over 20% of hedgehogs in Poland, study warns

A study led by Nottingham Trent University and reported by BBC News found that each year between 15 % and 29 % of hedgehogs in the United Kingdom die under the wheels of cars and trucks, accounting for roughly two‑fifths of all hedgehog deaths. The research highlights road traffic as a major mortality factor for the species.

In Poland, where two hedgehog species live, similar risks are emerging. Habitat fragmentation and a lack of systematic data on vehicle collisions are identified as key drivers of declining hedgehog numbers. Experts warn that road‑related deaths could threaten the viability of small, isolated populations, adding to other pressures such as agricultural machinery, chemicals and predation.

The findings call for increased monitoring and mitigation measures to protect hedgehogs on European roads.
