Robert Kocharyan detained on corruption charges in Armenia
Former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan and his eldest son, Sedrak Kocharyan, have been placed in two-month pre-trial detention following allegations of corruption. The Anti-Corruption Committee is investigating claims that Kocharyan used his former presidential authority to misappropriate public assets and acquire property at prices significantly below market value.
Following his arrest, the 71-year-old former leader was hospitalized due to deteriorating health. His son, opposition MP Levon Kocharyan, noted that his father had been scheduled for cardiovascular surgery prior to the incident. Reports indicate a dispute regarding his medical care, with investigative authorities transferring him to the Saint Gregory the Illuminator medical center rather than his preferred facility, Erebuni, where he recently underwent surgery.
The arrest has intensified political tensions between the Kocharyan family and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. While the government characterizes the case as a matter of illegal enrichment, supporters of the former president describe the legal actions as a targeted political attack. Analysts suggest the development may also reflect shifting dynamics in Armenia's relationship with Russia.
