Polycystic ovary syndrome reclassified as metabolic syndrome (PMOS)
An international consensus published in The Lancet has renamed polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) as polycystic ovary metabolic syndrome (PMOS), emphasizing its endocrine‑metabolic nature. The new criteria incorporate insulin resistance, hyperinsulinaemia, hormonal imbalances, obesity, dyslipidaemia and related cardiovascular risk.
Vittorio Unfer, president of the Experts Group on Inositol in Basic and Clinical Research on PCOS (Egoi‑PCOS), and Roberto Baldelli, director of the San Camillo‑Forlanini endocrinology unit in Rome, said the redefinition will shift treatment toward multidisciplinary management, lifestyle and dietary changes, and the use of insulin‑sensitising agents such as myo‑inositol. They highlighted the importance of early diagnosis, patient education and collaboration with nutritionists to improve outcomes for women with the condition.
