Roberto Fico proposed as extraordinary commissioner for Campi Flegrei
The Italian government majority has proposed an amendment to decree-law 144/2026 that would appoint Roberto Fico, the President of the Campania Region, as the extraordinary commissioner for the Campi Flegrei area.
The role aims to centralize coordination for managing bradyseism and seismic events. Key responsibilities include providing population assistance, repairing and reconstructing public and private buildings, restoring infrastructure and services, and reducing seismic vulnerability. The designated area currently includes Naples, Pozzuoli, Bacoli, and Monte di Procida, with potential for future expansion.
Under the proposal, the commissioner would hold significant authority, including the power to issue ordinances that bypass certain existing regulations. To prevent administrative delays, the commissioner could mandate local entities to act within 15 days, after which the commissioner could directly implement necessary measures. A support structure of up to 30 personnel would be established within the Campania Region to assist the commissioner, who could also appoint sub-commissioners and experts.
