Roberto Sánchez leads opposition coalition demanding election reforms and Pedro Castillo’s release

Former Peruvian presidential candidate Roberto Sánchez Palomino has rejected the proclamation of Keiko Fujimori as president, calling the runoff result illegitimate. He announced the creation of a new opposition front, bringing together his Juntos por Perú party with Obras and Ahora Nación, to act as a parliamentary watchdog and press for political reforms.

Sánchez’s coalition demands several measures: the release of former president Pedro Castillo, the repeal of recent “pro‑crime” laws, and the establishment of a commission to investigate the 50 deaths recorded during the 2022‑2023 anti‑government protests. He has filed a petition with the Inter‑American Commission on Human Rights and warned that dialogue with the new government will not occur until these conditions are met.

The leader also announced a series of peaceful marches across Lima and other regions during the July Fiestas Patrias, and criticised U.S. ambassador Bernie Navarro for allegedly intervening in Peru’s elections. Sánchez plans further mobilisations and legal actions to challenge the election outcome and demand accountability for alleged state crimes.
