Robotaxi services expand amid technical quirks and strict policies
Driverless robotaxis are becoming increasingly common in major metropolitan areas, though the technology continues to face unique user experiences and regulatory scrutiny. In California, a Tesla robotaxi passenger reported hearing continuous flatulence sounds through the vehicle's speakers. This was identified as a software feature introduced in 2018 called “emissions test mode,” which allows owners to trigger specific sounds from selected seats.
As these services expand, companies like Waymo are operating in at least 15 major cities across the United States, including locations in Arizona, Texas, California, and Florida. With this growth, service policies are becoming a point of interest for passengers. Waymo maintains a “zero tolerance policy” regarding weapons, explicitly stating in its Rider Rules that firearms are strictly prohibited in its vehicles.
