Rocket Lab unveils portable GHOST spaceport system

Rocket Lab has announced the Global Hypersonic & Orbital Spaceport Technology (GHOST) system, a modular launch infrastructure designed to be packed into standard shipping containers. This system allows for the rapid deployment of launch sites, including rocket stages, ground support equipment, propellant-loading hardware, and telemetry-tracking units.

Supported by a US$266-million contract from the US Space Force, the GHOST system aims to address the increasing demand for orbital launches and the shortage of available launch pads. The technology provides military advantages by allowing for unpredictable launch trajectories and rapid setup in various geographic locations. It also offers commercial utility for allies seeking orbital access without the high costs of permanent spaceport construction.

The system will first be deployed at Rocket Lab Launch Complex 4 at the Pacific Spaceport Complex in Kodiak, Alaska, to support missions for the Electron and HASTE rockets.
