Rodopi: Man arrested for fatal stabbing of estranged wife

A 53-year-old man has been arrested in the village of Dialampi, Rodopi, for the fatal stabbing of his 44-year-old estranged wife. The attack occurred on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, during a family gathering to celebrate the 16-year-old daughter's birthday. The victim, who had been working seasonally on the island of Thassos, was reportedly killed in front of her children.

Following the murder, the suspect attempted suicide by ingesting pesticide and self-harming with a knife. He was transported to Komotini Hospital, where he remains under police guard. Investigators seized two knives from the crime scene.

The victim's lawyer stated that the couple had planned to meet with a lawyer the following day to finalize their divorce. The suspect has a documented history of domestic violence; in 2022, he was arrested in Crete for making threats against the same woman. Despite previous reports of abuse and the victim's requests for psychiatric intervention, the suspect had been undergoing mandated medication rather than involuntary commitment.
