Fatal domestic violence incident in Rodopi

Overview

In the village of Dialambi, Rodopi, a 53-year-old man is accused of fatally stabbing his 44-year-old wife during a family celebration for their 16-year-old daughter’s birthday. The victim, who had been working seasonally on Thassos, had returned to the area specifically for the occasion. The attack, which occurred in front of the couple’s three children, involved the suspect inflicting fatal wounds to the woman’s neck and body.

Following the attack, the suspect allegedly attempted suicide by self-inflicting wounds with a knife and ingesting a toxic liquid, identified as pesticide. He was rescued by emergency services and remains at Sismanogleio General Hospital in Komotini under heavy police guard. While previously reported as regaining consciousness, he is currently described as being in stable condition.

The couple, of Albanian origin, had been separated for approximately six months. Investigations suggest the murder may have been premeditated to prevent the couple from finalizing a divorce, as they had a meeting scheduled with a lawyer the following day. The 16-year-old daughter alerted authorities, while the 19-year-old son attempted to transport his mother to the hospital.

Police seized two knives at the crime scene. The suspect faces charges including premeditated murder, domestic violence, and weapons law violations. He has a prior history of domestic violence involving the same victim, including a 2022 arrest in Heraklion, Crete, for making threats. It has since been noted that despite previous reports of abuse and the victim's requests for psychiatric intervention, the suspect had been undergoing mandated medication rather than involuntary commitment.
