Rodrigo Lara warns against political misuse of earthquake aid in Buenaventura
Colombian Interior Minister Rodrigo Lara issued a stern warning against the political exploitation of humanitarian aid following a recent earthquake in Buenaventura. During a visit to affected communities alongside Vice President José Manuel Restrepo and Mayor Ligia Córdoba Martínez, Lara emphasized that aid must reach only those in genuine need.
Lara stated that those attempting to use the emergency for political gain “will go to hell” and that such actions are “unforgivable.” He urged citizens to report any politicians attempting to intervene in the distribution process.
To address the crisis, the Minister requested support from national cement companies to provide essential construction materials, such as cement, rebar, and wood, to reinforce damaged homes. Additionally, due to the local hospital network being overwhelmed by the emergency, Lara requested the installation of a field hospital to expand medical capacity in the region. The relief efforts are being coordinated with the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) and the Governor's Office of Valle del Cauca.
