Argentina: Milei defends Caputo and claims USD 125B reserve

Argentine President Javier Milei has dismissed rumors regarding the departure of Economy Minister Luis Caputo, describing their working relationship as ‘symbiotic’ and asserting that the administration's economic policies are his own. Milei stated that the government maintains USD 125 billion in reserves to mitigate potential currency volatility during the 2027 electoral cycle, citing energy surpluses and debt refinancing as key factors.

Simultaneously, the administration faces legal and oversight scrutiny. The Auditoría General de la Nación (AGN) reported a USD 1.023 billion loss related to gold-linked derivative operations conducted by the Central Bank (BCRA) in 2025. In response, lawyer Gregorio Dalbón has requested the detention of Minister Caputo and Central Bank President Santiago Bausili, alleging potential fraud and abuse of authority. The BCRA has been given 15 days to provide details regarding these gold reserves and financial operations.

On the legislative front, Governor Rogelio Frigerio of Entre Ríos has expressed support for eliminating the PASO primary elections. Frigerio argued that reducing the number of electoral calls would prevent voter fatigue and address declining participation ahead of the 2027 elections.
