PT PLN reports widespread rolling blackouts across Java, prompting public apology

Since mid‑June 2026 PT PLN (Persero) has imposed rolling blackouts across many parts of Java, affecting cities such as Surabaya, Jakarta, Tangerang Selatan, Depok, Bogor, Yogyakarta and surrounding districts. The utility attributes the outages to technical failures at two large power plants and a shortage of medium‑calorie coal required by steam‑turbine generators. Load‑shedding measures were applied to stabilise the grid while PLN accelerates contracts with coal suppliers and coordinates with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

The interruptions have disrupted households, schools, small businesses, online work and public services. In Surabaya traffic was affected by non‑functioning traffic lights, while train operations around Surabaya Gubeng station continued unchanged. Local officials and politicians, including DPR member Mufti Anam, have called for transparent information and faster remedial action. PLN has issued public apologies, urged safety precautions such as avoiding indoor generator use and warned citizens to unplug appliances during outages.

PLN says the load‑management plan is temporary and will be lifted as supply stabilises, and it continues to mobilise resources to restore full power across the island.
