Rolls-Royce bids for India's AMCA stealth fighter engine

India is evaluating international proposals for the engine of its Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), a fifth-generation stealth fighter jet. British aerospace company Rolls-Royce has submitted a significant bid, proposing the co-development of a new engine with over 120 kilonewtons of thrust.

Rolls-Royce's offer includes a full transfer of technology and intellectual property rights, aiming to foster Indian self-reliance. The company also emphasized that its proposed engine would be free of third-party components to mitigate the risk of future sanctions. This proposal follows a strategic partnership announced between Rolls-Royce and India's Reliance Industries in August 2026 to collaborate on engine design and maintenance.

India is also considering a proposal from France's Safran. Meanwhile, the deadline for vendors to submit bids for the broader AMCA project has been extended by two months to October 30, with bids scheduled to open on October 31.
