Rolls-Royce SMR plans modular nuclear reactor construction in Hungary

Rolls-Royce SMR is planning to construct a small modular reactor in Hungary, aiming for long-term industrial and technological cooperation rather than a simple equipment sale. The proposed plant would provide a net electrical power of 470 megawatts, utilizing established pressurized water reactor technology designed for economic construction.

Alexis Honner, the company’s business development manager for new markets, noted that the reactor's size is a deliberate choice to balance high performance and cost-efficiency with the ability to remain transportable via existing road infrastructure. Rolls-Royce has been in discussions with the Hungarian government, energy companies, and nuclear authorities regarding SMR installation since 2022.

The company has already contacted over 40 Hungarian suppliers, with several pre-qualified for the process. Honner stated at the Energy Investment Forum 2026 that mass production could reduce the cost of new reactors by 22-25 percent, potentially facilitating private financing.
