Romagna emergency services face fragility amid staffing shortages
Michele Gaudio, president of the Order of Physicians of Forlì-Cesena, has warned that the regional 118 emergency system is becoming more fragile. He highlighted the increasing number of ambulances operating without medical personnel on board as a key concern.
While Ausl Romagna stated that over 90% of ambulances still carry a nurse, the organization has introduced four vehicles staffed only by rescuers as part of a summer pilot program. Gaudio noted that the core challenge facing the local health authority is the ability to recruit and retain medical professionals.
Despite these challenges, Gaudio pointed out that Romagna’s coverage remains higher than national standards, with one advanced rescue vehicle available for every 22,000 inhabitants, compared to the ministerial standard of one per 60,000.
