Tuscany updates medical abortion protocol and Italy observes breastfeeding week

The Tuscany Region is updating its protocol for medical abortion to allow patients to take the second pill, misoprostol, at home in clinically appropriate cases. This follows the administration of the first medication in a healthcare facility. Regional Health Councilor Monia Monni stated that the update aims to safeguard legal rights and ensure clinical safety and continuity of care in compliance with Law 194/1978.

Separately, various Italian regions are observing World Breastfeeding Week from October 1 to 7. Initiatives include flash mobs, informational meetings, and support groups organized by local health authorities (ASL) and community organizations. The 2026 theme, ‘Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works,’ focuses on reinforcing effective support systems for families and newborns.
