Tuscany medical abortion protocol updates

Overview

The Tuscany region is updating its medical abortion protocol to allow patients to administer the second medication, misoprostol, at home in clinically appropriate cases, provided the first medication, mifepristone, is administered in a healthcare facility. Regional Health Councilor Monia Monni stated the update aims to “safeguard legal rights and ensure clinical safety and continuity of care” in accordance with Law 194/1978.

Medical professionals have raised concerns regarding this shift. Dr. Alberto Virgolino, President of AIGOC, noted that incomplete or failed abortions are more frequent with pharmacological methods than surgical ones. Citing 2022 Ministry of Health data, he pointed out that the rate of incomplete or failed abortions was 1.19% for pharmacological methods compared to 0.27% for surgical interventions. Virgolino also highlighted that pharmacological abortions resulted in higher hospitalization rates due to complications such as hemorrhages and infections.
