Romania begins emergency sheep and goat vaccination campaign

Romania has launched an emergency immunization campaign for sheep and goats in Constanța and Tulcea counties. The campaign, which began on October 25, was moved forward by one day following the early arrival of vaccine doses from the European Union's strategic reserves.

The vaccination effort utilizes 1.1 million doses donated by the European Commission, valued at over 1.3 million lei. This includes 800,000 doses of Jovivac to combat sheep and goat pox and 300,000 doses of Pestevac to target small ruminant pest (PPR).

The initiative aims to stabilize the epidemiological situation and lift restrictions on the movement and export of live animals to third countries and other EU member states, which are currently in place until December 31, 2026. While livestock breeders have welcomed the move, some have expressed concerns regarding the total number of doses required and the potential impact of the vaccines on raw materials like milk.

In response to potential unrest, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has warned against attempts to manipulate farmers into organizing large-scale protests, stating that the government has already addressed the primary requests of the sector.
