Romania adopts German solution for EU digital identity wallet
Romania will implement the European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI) using the open‑source solution developed in Germany. The rollout is planned in stages, with the first mobile application, RoEUDIW, expected to launch in 2026 and initially provide basic identity verification and age‑checking functions.
The wallet will allow citizens to store and present official documents such as driving licences, university diplomas and health‑card information directly from their phones while keeping personal data on a national infrastructure. A coordinating inter‑ministerial group led by Vice‑Prime‑Minister Oana Gheorghiu will oversee the legal and technical framework, with the Ministry of Economy, Digitalisation, Entrepreneurship and Tourism supervising the ecosystem, the Ministry of Internal Affairs delivering the mobile app and backend, and the Special Telecommunications Service managing certification and the central registry. The system will be open to private‑sector providers in the longer term, provided they meet national certification standards.
