Romania advances Cluj‑Oradea railway modernization

The national railway operator CFR SA reported that work on Lots 3 and 4 of the Cluj‑Napoca – Oradea – Episcopia Bihor line is 26% and 48% complete, respectively. The 99.48 km project includes rebuilding infrastructure, signalling, electrification and doubling a 14.85 km section to the Hungarian border. When finished, the line will support passenger speeds of up to 160 km/h and freight speeds of up to 120 km/h, improving north‑west Romania’s connectivity to the European rail network.

The upgrades are part of a public‑interest initiative aimed at enhancing safety, capacity and sustainable mobility in the region.
