Romania transport projects – End July 2026

Entities: Romania · Costel Fotea · A1 highway · Basarab Passage, Bucharest · Euro‑Asfalt

Overview

Late July 2026 brought further advances across Romania’s transport network. On the A1 motorway, work on the missing Margina–Holdea segment accelerated. Tunnel 1 is over 90 % complete, while Tunnel 2 awaits excavation of its remaining galleries. All four tunnel portals have been finished and are being fitted with modern safety and communication systems. An on‑site asphalt plant and a prefabricated‑beam factory are supplying material for the final road layer, paving the way for uninterrupted traffic between the Lugoj–Deva corridor and the rest of the national network. In Bucharest, a 57 million‑lei contract was awarded to refurbish the historic Basarab Bridge, including full resurfacing, replacement of corroded components and drainage renewal, with traffic limited to a single lane during works. Sibiu’s municipal council opened a 5.18 million‑lei contract to restore the Maria Tereza Bridge, reinforcing its structure, relocating utilities, repairing walkways and installing architectural lighting. Cluj‑Napoca’s provisional bridge over the Someșul Mic river has been fully assembled and opened to traffic, with access roads on George Coșbuc Street completed. The temporary crossing will serve the city while the permanent Garibaldi Bridge continues under the 60.6‑million‑lei contract managed by Geiger Transilvania. The government secured a €630 million loan from the European Investment Bank to fund the Brașov‑Sighișoara railway upgrade, enabling passenger speeds of up to 160 km/h and complementing earlier national co‑financing and EU funds. New actions in August 2026 expanded the programme. Major city road works began: Sibiu closed several streets for water‑ and road‑infrastructure reconstruction; Timișoara altered line 21, swapping large buses for smaller electric units and rerouting to cut noise; the Bihor‑mountain DJ 764A section started cold‑recycling asphalt paving.
