Romania advances major railway electrification projects

Romania is making significant progress on two strategic railway infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing connectivity and modernization.

On the Bucharest-Giurgiu line, work is accelerating on Lot 2 of the project to modernize the infrastructure between Bucharest Nord, Jilava, Giurgiu Nord, and the Bulgarian border. Key developments include the installation of electrification poles across much of the route and construction at the Băneasa Giurgiu station. A major component involves the construction of a new viaduct at Daia to bypass marshy terrain that previously caused ground instability. Foundations for the viaduct pillars have been poured, with rail installation expected within the next year.

In northern Romania, the electrification of the 30.3-kilometer Dărmănești–Vicșani section has reached 20% physical progress. This €57.6 million project is part of the Baltic–Black Sea–Aegean multimodal corridor. Funded in part by the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), the project is designed to improve north-south connectivity and facilitate more efficient cross-border freight and passenger transport between Romania and Ukraine.
