Romania-Moldova A8 Motorway Section 4 Contract Signed

On 2 July 2026 the National Road Investment Company (CNIR) of Romania and Moldovan authorities signed a contract to design and construct Section 4 of the A8 ‘Unirii’ Motorway. The agreement covers the final 15.5 km of the route in Romania and the first 5 km of motorway on the Republic of Moldova side, including the new Prut River bridge at Ungheni. The project, valued at 3.57 billion Romanian lei (≈ 700 million EUR), is financed through the EU Security Action for Europe (SAFE) programme and will be implemented over 46 months (10 months design, 36 months construction). It will incorporate 14 bridges and overpasses, two tunnels (one 1,760 m) and two interchanges, with priority given to the 2.77‑km stretch between the Golăiesti interchange and the Prut bridge.

Romanian interim Transport Minister Radu‑Dinel Miruță and Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Bolea signed the bilateral agreement, which also establishes a framework for the construction, operation and maintenance of the cross‑border infrastructure. Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said, “Ne propunem finalizarea proiectului până în 2030.” The road will strengthen connectivity between the EU and its eastern partners and is expected to boost regional economic development and mobility.
