Sighetu Marmației II border crossing opens between Romania and Ukraine
A new road connection between Romania and Ukraine has been inaugurated with the opening of the Sighetu Marmației II – Bila Țerkva International Border Crossing Point and a 268-meter bridge over the Tisa River. The project, valued at over 50 million euros, provides a direct link between Sighetu Marmației in Romania and Bila Țerkva in Ukraine.
The operationalization of the new crossing will occur in three distinct stages. The first stage, beginning October 8, 2026, allows passenger vehicles with a maximum authorized mass of up to 3.5 tons. A second stage will eventually extend access to vehicles exceeding 3.5 tons, including buses, though a specific date for this expansion has not been established. The final stage, scheduled for December 2027, will open the crossing to pedestrian traffic.
The new infrastructure includes the bridge, administrative buildings for border police and customs, control halls, and necessary technical installations. This development aims to alleviate pressure on existing cross-border routes following increased traffic demands in the region.
