Romania advances waste management and recycling infrastructure
In Romania, waste management initiatives are expanding through both specialized collection campaigns and the maturation of the Deposit-Return System (SGR).
ECO SERV, in collaboration with ADID Timiș and local authorities, is organizing periodic collection campaigns for bulky waste. Accepted items include household furniture (without glass), mattresses, plastic bathtubs, shower cabins (without glass), plastic toilet water tanks, large toys without electronic components, door and window frames (without glass), uncontaminated large barrels or containers, large rugs, and large paintings. Items containing impurities such as glass, soil, or concrete, as well as hazardous waste and electronic equipment, are excluded from these specific campaigns.
Separately, RetuRO CEO Adela Smeu reported that the Deposit-Return System has collected over 12 billion beverage containers and directed nearly 900,000 tons of material toward recycling in less than three years of operation. Smeu noted that the system has established a functional national infrastructure for collection and sorting, positioning Romania to meet European environmental objectives and circular economy targets.
