Romania animal welfare groups urge sterilization to combat rising abandonment

Animal welfare organizations in Romania are highlighting a surge in abandoned puppies and calling for increased sterilization to combat the growing number of stray animals. ASPA București reported that 23 puppies were taken into their shelters in a single week, a figure higher than the number of adult dogs rescued during the same period.

Authorities emphasize that sterilization is a legal requirement for pet owners, with non-compliance carrying fines between 5,000 and 10,000 lei. Additionally, abandoning animals is illegal and can result in fines up to 12,000 lei.

In Buzău, the Hăpluț și prietenii Association manages approximately 200 dogs and 24 cats, many of whom arrive in poor condition due to malnutrition, untreated illnesses, or trauma from accidents and abuse. The association notes that the financial and logistical burden of providing food and veterinary care—including surgeries that can cost between 1,200 and 7,000 lei—is extremely difficult to sustain. Advocates urge the public to prioritize adoption over purchasing pets to free up space for animals in need.
