Romania approves 66 million euro aid for pig and cattle farmers

The Romanian government has promulgated two new state aid schemes to support pig and cattle farmers, aimed at compensating for increased costs related to the Middle East crisis. The total support package is valued at approximately 336 million lei (roughly 66 million euros).

For the cattle and buffalo sector, the budget is approximately 54.4 million euros (277.18 million lei). Eligible farmers can receive 68 euros per head of animal. To qualify, producers must generally hold at least 10 animals, though this threshold drops to five for farms in mountainous areas.

The pig farming sector will receive approximately 11.54 million euros (58.8 million lei). Support is calculated based on housing capacity: 11.9 euros per place for fattening pigs and 13.7 euros per place for breeding animals (sows and gilts).

Applications can be submitted through the Payment and Intervention Agency for Agriculture (APIA) starting September 1, 2026. The implementation of these schemes is subject to authorization by the European Commission. The aid is intended to offset rising costs for fuel and fertilizers.
