Romania approves drought compensation for corn and sunflower farmers

The Romanian government has approved financial support for corn and sunflower farmers affected by the 2025 drought. According to a decision made on September 18, 2026, producers can receive up to 333 lei per hectare (approximately 63 euros) for areas where crops were 100% affected. The compensation amount decreases proportionally based on the degree of damage, which must be between 30% and 100% as verified by official assessments.

The total budget for this support scheme is 155.36 million lei (approximately 29.6 million euros). The funding is split equally between the national budget and non-reimbursable European financing through the European Agricultural Guarantee Fund (FEGA).

Farmers have expressed significant dissatisfaction with the amount, describing the compensation as insufficient to cover losses or debts to suppliers. While the government stated this amount doubles the emergency aid provided by the European Union, critics note that previous discussions had suggested higher figures, such as 100 euros per hectare.
