Romania's SRI awards €196 million SAFE contract to Digi for AI cybersecurity platform

The Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) has signed a contract worth €196 million with Digi România under the EU‑funded Security Action for Europe (SAFE) programme. The agreement calls for the development of an integrated large‑language‑model (LLM) platform to enhance national cyber‑security capabilities, to be built entirely in Romania over a four‑year period.

SRI states the project meets a genuine need, noting that the platform will "automate complex analysis and investigation of cyber‑security incidents" and bolster domestic AI and cyber‑defence skills. The contract was approved by the Supreme Council of National Defence (CSAT) and the Romanian Parliament, and coordinated by the head of the Prime Minister’s Chancellery.

Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan and other officials have stressed that the government itself was not involved in the selection, describing the process as a routine procurement by each authority. Political opposition has raised concerns about possible favoritism, given Digi’s media links, but SRI maintains the procedure complied fully with applicable law.
