Romanian border sees increased drone activity and airspace incursions

Recent military activity near the Romanian border has seen an escalation in drone-related incidents. A Ukrainian cargo vessel was targeted by drones on the Danube near the Chilia branch, with explosions visible from the Romanian village of Plauru.

In a separate incident, Spanish F-18 fighter jets, operating as part of a NATO air defense mission, successfully shot down a Russian-origin Geran-2 drone that had entered Romanian airspace near Galați. This event follows a weekend of increased aerial activity.

According to statistics from the Romanian Ministry of National Defense, over 110 drone attacks have been recorded in the vicinity of the Ukrainian border since the start of the conflict. This includes 39 instances of Russian drones entering Romanian airspace and approximately 50 cases where drones or fragments were identified on Romanian territory. Romanian Defense Minister Radu Miruță stated that despite the intensification of these attacks, there is no indication that the risk level to the Romanian population has increased.
