Romania-Bulgaria travel: Fuel price gaps and rail service tests

Recent reports highlight significant economic and logistical differences for travelers moving between Romania and Bulgaria.

Regarding transportation, a test of the Bucharest-Varna train service revealed a mix of modern and aging infrastructure. While the CFR Călători carriage for the Varna route offers modern amenities including functional air conditioning and comfortable seating, the overall journey is impacted by varying track conditions. Some sections allow speeds of up to 120 km/h, but other segments suffer from poor track quality, leading to significant jolting and reduced speeds.

In terms of fuel costs, Romanian drivers face substantially higher prices than those in Bulgaria. A full 50-liter tank in Romania can cost between 100 and 150 lei more than in Bulgaria. This disparity is primarily driven by taxation structures. Bulgaria applies lower excise duties on both gasoline and diesel compared to Romania. Furthermore, Romania's 19% VAT is applied to a price that already includes the excise duty, creating a compounding tax effect that further widens the price gap at the pump.
