Balkan railway and transport logistics

Logistical and economic disparities have been identified regarding travel and transport between Romania and Bulgaria. Initial reports focused on the Bucharest-Varna rail service, noting a combination of modern amenities and aging track infrastructure that causes significant jolting. Additionally, a notable gap in fuel prices exists due to taxation differences, with Romanian drivers facing higher costs because of higher excise duties and a compounding VAT structure compared to Bulgaria.

Concerns have since expanded to include potential disruptions to international freight traffic across the Balkans. Bulgarian Minister of Transport and Communications Georgi Peev warned that scheduled railway repairs in Serbia—specifically the Niš to Dimitrovgrad section—and a planned suspension of traffic on the Giurgiu North to Ruse line in Romania could impact cargo flows between Central Europe, the Balkans, and Turkey. To manage these risks, officials from the involved nations have agreed to technical discussions to coordinate repairs and pre-allocate freight time slots.
