Romania calls UN emergency meeting after Russian drone strike, offers bases to US

Romania’s interim foreign affairs minister Oana Toiu said the country requested an emergency session of the UN Security Council after a Russian‑made drone struck a residential building in Galaţi on May 29, injuring a mother and her child. She noted that the drone flew for about four minutes in Romanian airspace, part of a larger Russian swarm targeting Ukrainian infrastructure, and emphasized that this was the first time Romania has appealed to the Council for a direct national security threat.

Toiu also announced that Romania has approved the use of its military bases and infrastructure for defensive activities, such as air refueling, to support U.S. efforts to keep the Strait of Hormuz open. In a meeting with UN Secretary‑General António Guterres, she discussed the drone incident, the broader Gulf‑region situation and the need for stronger international coordination. The incident prompted condemnation from more than 50 countries, with U.S. UN ambassador Mike Waltz labeling it an “irresponsible Russian drone attack.”
