Romania car insurance premiums rise sharply, Groupama leads price hikes

Average monthly premiums for compulsory motor insurance (RCA) in Romania climbed about 13% by mid‑July compared with January, marking the first double‑digit increase in three years. The surge was led by market leader Groupama, whose average premium jumped roughly 56%, while other firms saw rises ranging from 3.5% to around 30%. Grawe was the sole company posting a lower average premium, a result attributed to a shift in its portfolio mix rather than a broad price cut. Out of ten insurers, nine posted higher average premiums in the first half of July, indicating a market‑wide upward trend.

The price pressure reflects broader cost dynamics in the Romanian insurance sector, with insurers adjusting rates amid changing risk assessments and competitive positioning.
