Romania commemorates 1951 Bărăgan deportations with documentary premiere and art exhibition

On June 16, Deputy Daniel Blaga of the USR party attended the premiere of the documentary *Vocile Bărăganului. Deportarea din 1951* at Cotroceni Palace. The film recounts the forced deportation of roughly 44,000 Romanian citizens of diverse ethnicities in the night of 16‑17 June 1951, describing the two‑week train journey without water or food and the brutal living conditions in the Bărăgan Plain. Blaga stressed that “memoria nu este doar pentru trecut, ci este vocea prezentului” and called the documentary a necessary and emotional tribute to the victims.

Simultaneously, in Reșița the 75th anniversary of the deportations was marked by an art exhibition at the Caraș‑Severin County Cultural Directorate. Works by the “Deutsche Kunst Reschitza” circle were displayed, and survivor Cornelia Fetea, who was a child deportee, spoke about her experience and her current role leading the local association of former political detainees. The exhibition aims to keep the memory of the Bărăgan tragedy alive for new generations.
