Romania commemorates Holocaust victims and Transnistria deportations
October 9 marks the National Day of Commemoration for the Victims of the Holocaust in Romania, a date chosen to honor those deported to Transnistria starting 85 years ago in 1941. During this period, tens of thousands of Jews were deported to the territory, where many faced extermination through forced labor, starvation, and lack of medical care.
In Lugoj, students at the ‘Iulia Hasdeu’ Theoretical High School commemorated the day through an educational project titled ‘The Holocaust through the Eyes of Children’. Participants used art, including drawings, paintings, and collages, to express reflections on the historical tragedy and the consequences of intolerance. The initiative aimed to foster empathy and awareness regarding human rights and democratic values among the youth.
