Romanian commemorations of Jewish heritage and history
Overview
Romanian leadership has engaged in various commemorative activities regarding the country’s Jewish community and historical heritage.
During Rosh Hashanah celebrations, President Nicușor Dan and Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan honored the Jewish community, noting its essential role in the development of Romanian culture, science, and the economy. In September 2026, during a gala dinner marking Rosh Hashanah 5787 and the 90th anniversary of the unification of Romanian Jewish communities, leaders reaffirmed the Federation of Jewish Communities in Romania (FCER) as a vital partner. Prime Minister Bolojan specifically commended the FCER for protecting synagogues and cemeteries and serving as a bridge to Israel.
In observance of the National Day of Commemoration for the Victims of the Holocaust in Romania on October 9, officials and institutions held events to honor those deported to Transnistria. At Cotroceni Palace, President Dan emphasized the necessity of understanding history and warned against scapegoating minority groups. In Lugoj, students at the ‘Iulia Hasdeu’ Theoretical High School used art in the ‘The Holocaust through the Eyes of Children’ project to reflect on intolerance and human rights.
Additional commemorations took place at the Karlsburg/Alba Iulia synagogue, featuring a memorial service and concert. During the event, historian Dr. Andreea Rotche detailed the historical operations under the regime of Marshal Ion Antonescu, noting that between 105,000 and 120,000 deaths resulted specifically from deportations to Transnistria. The National Museum of Bukovina has also contributed to these efforts through its ‘Testimonies and Destinies’ documentary exhibition.
