Romania commute times reach 53 minutes daily due to traffic

A study by talent management firm SD Worx reveals that Romanian employees spend an average of 53 minutes commuting to work daily. While this duration matches the average in the Netherlands, the underlying causes differ significantly. In the Netherlands, workers travel an average of 63 kilometers, whereas Romanian commuters cover much shorter distances but are delayed by heavy traffic and urban congestion.

Across Europe, the average daily commute is 48 minutes. Belgium reports the longest commute times at 61 minutes, driven by a high number of “super-commuters”—13% of whom spend at least two hours traveling. Sweden and Ireland also report high averages of 57 and 56 minutes, respectively. Conversely, Italy and Slovenia record the shortest average commutes at approximately 35 minutes.
