Romania confirms first severe West Nile infection and investigates additional cases

A 22‑year‑old woman from Vaslui was diagnosed with a severe West Nile virus infection after presenting with intense headache, speech disturbances, dizziness and double vision. She was transferred to the Clinical Hospital of Infectious Diseases “Sfânta Parascheva” in Iași, where Dr. Florin Roșu confirmed the diagnosis and reported a favorable response to symptomatic treatment.

Two more patients are now under observation: a 50‑year‑old man from Iași and a 70‑year‑old man, both with suspected West Nile infection. Their serology results are pending. Health officials warned that early hospital presentation is crucial, noting that while most infections are asymptomatic, severe cases can cause neurological complications. The season of heightened mosquito activity (May–November) calls for active epidemiological surveillance and personal preventive measures.

Dr. Roșu emphasized the need for prompt diagnosis and community awareness, stating that “the infection is an active reality in our country, especially in the Moldavia region, and early detection is essential for effective treatment.”
