Romania considers early pension access for cancer survivors

In Romania, current pension regulations under Law no. 360/2023 require a minimum contribution period of 15 years for both men and women to qualify for a pension upon reaching the standard retirement age. Individuals who reach the age limit but lack the necessary years of contributions can complete the period by continuing to work or through voluntary contribution payments.

A new legislative proposal, signed by 58 AUR parliamentarians and registered in the Senate, seeks to amend these rules to benefit cancer survivors. The proposal suggests that individuals diagnosed with malignant neoplasms could access age-limit pensions starting at age 60, provided they have met the minimum legal contribution requirements. The initiators argue that the long-term physical and psychological effects of treatments like chemotherapy and radiotherapy necessitate special considerations for those returning to the workforce.

Additionally, experts note that discrepancies in pension calculations can occur due to missing documentation or incorrect employer reporting. Pensioners are advised to verify their contribution history through the CNPP portal for periods after April 2001 or by using workbooks for periods prior to that date to ensure all worked years are correctly accounted for.
