Romanian healthcare and social support reforms for oncology

Overview

In October 2026, Romania initiated several legislative and administrative proposals aimed at improving support for oncology patients. The National Health Insurance House (CNAS) proposed modifications to the framework contract to prioritize cancer prevention and early diagnosis. These measures include providing faster access to diagnostic services without referrals, offering low-dose CT scans for lung cancer risks, and expanding genetic testing from 8 to 14 types by January 2027. Additionally, the CNAS proposed enhanced support services such as psycho-oncology, rehabilitation, home care, and nutritional education.

Parallel to clinical reforms, the Romanian Senate’s specialized commission supported a bill to extend paid medical leave and indemnities to caregivers of adult oncology patients during diagnostic and monitoring phases.

Further legislative efforts were introduced by 58 AUR parliamentarians to amend pension regulations. This proposal seeks to allow cancer survivors to access age-limit pensions starting at age 60, provided they meet minimum legal contribution requirements, citing the long-term physical and psychological effects of treatments like chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
